Michael Wriston - boyghost in Monterey
I’ve been following Michael’s photography for a few years on flickr. He’s now selling prints on his website and I’ve purchased a few. The quality of these prints are wonderful. He’s selling them at a really reasonable price, shipped quickly. This your chance to take down those movie posters and have actual art in your space. I picked two photographs from his set in Baltimore. A few weeks ago he announced a hiatus of posting new work, but he’s still selling the prints.
Many people refer to the area around Monterey, California as “Steinbeck Country,” as it was the setting for some of John Steinbeck’s most famous stories. But it’s actually Dorothea Lange country, she documented the area first in her photography, and Steinbeck acknowledged that her portrait of the residents influenced his. Not many tourists want to travel back to Lange country.
When Michael announced he was moving to this area, I scratched my head a bit. Over the decades it’s turned into something of a depot for people of retirement age and tourists; the architecture and downtown businesses reflect this. Of course Michael has been looking behind the peach stucco, but there are actual minefields around Monterey. Beyond the golf courses and big box stores, the military past, there are neighborhoods and towns in the midst of a deep recession and the real estate collapse. He might be taking a break from posting online, but we haven’t heard the last of boyghost in California.
