Last month I posted this Bruce Davidson shot, but it was black and white. At first I thought maybe somebody removed the color, but look at the boy’s right hand, his leg and the overall frame. It’s possible the other version was also color, or Davidson was using two cameras.
I wasn’t aware Davidson used color before the 1980 Subway series, and I’d love to see more from this period. I can’t decide which version I like better; but the dense contrasty color, somewhat underexposed, really gives the feeling of sootiness and the boy’s face and his pink doll are lost in the middle of it. Which version do you prefer?
