1. The couples of Robert Frank’s “The Americans”

    People often discuss the symbolism of crosses, the flags, the jukeboxes/coffins in “The Americans,” but there are also many couples in the book. They are in the greatest concentration towards the back of the book. This photoset has all the couples from the book, in the order in which they appear.

    12. martinmcgagh said: Yeah the couples are what always jump out at me too in The Americans. This notion of ‘companionship’. I imagine the last image in the book to be Frank’s own partner and child, though I don’t know this for sure. It’s a very hopeful note to close on.
