Lucas Thorpe explains:

My father took these photographs during the sixties when he was a deck officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Some are from his time as a cadet at Maine Maritime Academy the rest when he shipped out with American Export-Isbrandtsen Lines. He sailed on break bulk freighters and the ocean liner S.S Independence. He took thousands of slides and these are some of my favorites.
